DAY 2 in AMSTERDAM and the RIJKSMUSEUM

Image

Day 2 in Amsterdam and  my friend Judy and I were hit hard from the aftermath of  jet lag and slept in. When the  hotel maid finally  made us feel guilty enough for making her come back too many times than I care to admit,  we   ventured out  and headed for the Rijksmuseum. We went to the Van Gogh Museum yesterday  and, frankly, were a little disappointed.  But the Rijksmuseum was WONDERFUL!! If you go to Amsterdam and like art, do not miss this!  But  is also huge and would be difficult to see in an entire week, so, if possible, plan ahead of time what you must see.  There is something for everybody in the Rijksmuseum.  Art, furniture, fashion,  weapons, china, ship replicas, stain glass windows, ,,,the list goes on and on…   PLUS they let you take photos – always a plus!   (no photos allowed at the Van Gogh). Just a few of my favorites are  the 1737 Dutch pictorial  tiles (above) and……….Image

This beautiful floral  covered dish  with a  baby spilling flowers out onto the lid.  It was one of a set of 4.

This massive yet  intricately carved  fireplace.

This collector’s cabinet  from 1730 held little bottles containing  medicinal ingredients……

This ship replica  actually had moving working people  super- imposed onto the ship  to show a typical day onboard.

Kind of creepy, because they also looked sort of ghost like, but what a great idea!  How do they do it?????

Plus hundreds of  beautiful  paintings, some familiar such as” Vermeer’s Milkmaid”  and  some maybe not so familiar.

The Rijksmuseum is fascinating!    I also want to mention we had dinner  at the  Small Talk Restaurant  where the staff is friendly and the Hungarian Goulash and Apple Streudel was great!   Btw, we  walked 7 miles today – that will give you an idea to the size of the museum because our hotel was almost next door to it.

Tomorrow we go to Keukenhoff to see the tulips!

Thanks for reading and traveling along with me!
