HEIDELBERG, GERMANY -A CASTLE & CHRISTMAS MARKETS 2016

dscf3005-2

December 15, 2016

Heidelberg was another delightful  stop along the Rhine  River tour.   The Heidelberg Castle is a breath-taking sight  nestled 300 feet  in the hill above the city.  Built in 1386 and  over time it has been ravaged by wars, fires, and struck twice by lightening and captured by the French.

dscf3010

The castle has been somewhat restored but not open to the public.

dscf3015

The world’s  largest wine barrel sits in the castle.   With the capacity to hold 58,000 gallons, it stands almost 20 feet tall and has a dance floor on the top.

dscf3002

The courtyard stands in its ruin condition.

dscf3008

dscf3025-2

The view of the town and the Neckar River  below  the Castle grounds is spectacular !

dscf3022-2

dscf3026-2

The beautiful  view is referred to a landscape of roof tops.

dscf3020-2

Even the opposite side of the river is lovely, looking like a stately  miniature  display.

dscf3096

Walking the streets has  a  fantastic discovery in every step – such as Heidelberg’s Old Gate Bridge

Each Market Hut holds a different delight!

dscf3045

Did i mention Gluhwein?   It is a mulled wine concoction  ( tasting similar to  cough syrup) that is sold at all of the Christmas Markets.  Each market also has it’s own distinctively decorated ceramic  mug  in which it is served.    While I was not a fan of the wine, I did love the cups !

The Christmas Pyramid resembles a windmill with rotating figurines.  Today they are driven by electricity but in the way past  the hot air rising from the candles provided the energy.

I just love the Christmas Markets along with everything that can be found there.

BADEN-BADEN, GERMANY – CHRISTMAS MARKETS 2016

dscf2971-2

December  14, 2016

Baden-Baden, Germany is the stop of the day as the river  boat navigates along the Rhine.  A picturesque  city that borders the Black Forest and is well known  for the  mineral water spas and the upscale casino.

As usual, I enjoyed the beautiful  buildings, the Christmas decorations and Christmas Markets such as……

dscf2905

Beautiful  buildings…..

dscf2906

dscf2910-2

dscf2911-2

Beautiful decorations…

dscf2909-2

Just a reminder that this is Germany……

Plus this endearing  little  couple who were quietly  enjoying the afternoon.

Christmas Market Huts lined the paths of a  beautifully maintained park lawn with  city buildings and the hills  of the  Black Forest  as their backdrop.

dscf2925

This market hut wins for the most numerous items in their decoration and this is only half of it.

Plus an Angel’s Himmelspost an d Christ Kind, which translation  I pieced together means a sky-post for the German Santa.

dscf2921-2

There were  also a colorful  “stained glass’ displays  made by school children at the Markets

dscf2986

One a side note – I  couldn’t resist trying this cute gingerbread martini with dinner.  While it tasted pretty darn good,  it was also a bit strong so I sipped it very slowly.  Then I noticed….

dscf2988

the gingerbread man was not too  fairing well .  I  decided that was a prediction of things to come.

Strasbourg, France – Christmas Markets 2016

dscf2772

December 13, 2016

Strasbourg, France, a beautiful city  dating back to 1262,   was the destination for today.  Also the last of  the Alsace Region for this trip.  A spectacular  day it was as Strasbourg has so much to offer.  Beautiful buildings,  many different Christmas Markets, and holiday trimmings everywhere I look.

dscf2822

dscf2673-4

Half-timbered buildings mixed with…

dscf2683-2

different styles and  architecture …

dscf2714-2

many  festively decorated for the season!

dscf2705-2

dscf2665-3

La Petite France is a  particularly  scenic area in Strasbourg.

dscf2667-3

dscf2782-2

Traditional  guild signs  hang from many of the retailers.  Alsace pottery  is beautiful, comes in all kinds of colors and patterns and largely consists of endless sizes of  casserole dishes and accessory  pieces.  Casserole is actually a French word.  A merchant in one of the shops told me that Alsace was the home of the first “crock pot”!

dscf2745-2

Mazipan, tempting  in all shapes and sizes can be found in  patisserie  windows.

dscf2776-2

dscf2758-2

Nutella is dressed up also for the holiday !

dscf2689-3

Storks are migratory birds that return to Alsace to nest every year and are much loved in the area.  Their now empty nests  remaining in the  trees are huge!

dscf2804-2

Cute  Christmas Market huts were lined up in a rows.

dscf2759

Better watch out – Santa has a look out on one of the huts so he can  see who is naughty and who is nice.

dscf2728

Fashionable  holiday  window decorations  are a must – after all,  this is France.

dscf2790-2

Fashion comes in  many ways..

dscf2730

Gingerbread men are always a favorite.

dscf2778

Their is no limit to our love of gingerbread men.

dscf2747-2

Traditional trimmings along with…

dscf2698-3

the imaginative were plentiful.

dscf2857

When darkness fell, the city lit up with the magic of the season.

dscf2887

Strasbourg’s Cathedral, which is 472 feet tall,  looked incredible.

May your Christmas and every day in the future,

sparkle with happiness and new surprises.

RIQUEWIHR, FRANCE – ALSACE REGION

dscf2543

December 12, 2016

First stop for today as we navigate the Rhine River is Riquewihr, Germany.   Riquewihr is a small, darling, medieval town in the Alsace region.  The Alsace region  is a cultural and historical region on parts of the  Germany/France border.  Ages past this area would sometimes be considered part of France, other times, it was part of Germany.  It has its own language, Alsatian, and  a  unique combination of both country’s cuisine.

The purpose of this stop was , of course, to see the Christmas Markets,  but once Main Street – I fell in love and spent my time  there. Here is a sampling…

A NEW ADVENTURE, 1st STOP in BASEL, SWITZERLAND’S CHRISTMAS MARKETS

dscf2385-2

December 11, 2016

Christmas is sneaking up on us quickly  and the Christmas Markets in Europe are  a great place to kick start the holiday spirit.  I am doing just that via a Rhine River Cruise.

First stop is Basel, Switzerland.  A beautiful city with  bustling Christmas Markets…..

dscf2335-2

Different decorations  adorn the  tops of Market wooden huts, but this was my favorite.

dscf2304-2

Santa cooking on top of another hut is apropos since food is a large draw for  Christmas Markets.

dscf2392

I guess even Santa can get stressed out this time  of year.  Hang in there Santa, we  are all counting on you!

dscf2338

Night time especially is a fun time to visit the  Markets when all is lit up in their finest glory.  This Christmas Pyramid also has  figures on each tier that  go around and around like a carousel.

dscf2351

Besides the Christmas Markets, many of the  retail stores also jump into the holiday  spirit by decking out their window displays….

dscf2308-3

or by decorating the whole store front.

dscf2440

The city of Basel also has a special  Christmas  trolley car  that  ONLY children  are allowed to ride and it is driven by one of Santa’s helpers.

dscf2320-2

The night before boarding the boat for the cruise was spent at Les Trois Rois  (The  Three Kings) Hotel.  A hotel  has  occupied this location on the banks of the Rhine River  since  1641,  with the present building standing  since 1844.  These colorful  Winterberry  arrangements  stood in the lobby and….

dscf2319

Festive  red and silver ornaments hung  from the ceiling  above – guaranteed  to bring  a cheerful  “Wow”  effect to all.

dscf2446-2

Despite the cloudy day the view from the hotel window was scenic and depicted the  classic look of  Basel’s  homes/buildings.

dscf2372-2

Many of the  retailers  hang  intricate and  sometimes humorous  guild signs.

dscf2360-2

Trekking  through Basel”s hilly streets  toward the Markets, I  admired how this home was built  to flow with the slant of the terrain.

dscf2405-2

My  favorite building in Basel was the over  500 year old  Rathaus  (Town Hall).

The Headley-Whitney Museum in Lexington, KY

dscf2158

Necklace designed and created  by George Headley.

Nov. 26, 2016

Lexington,  KY  proved to be an interesting stop along the way to the  Annual  Gingerbread House Competition in  Asheville, NC .  With over 400 horse farms, Lexington’s  scenery is unbelievably beautiful and  serene.    A stop at the quirky  Headley-Whitney Museum  was  a fun diversion  from all the horses pastures.   George Headley  had been  a popular jewelry and bibelot  designer for the rich and famous, including many movie stars .  George and Barbara( Whitney)  were married in 1960, a union that lasted over 20 years.   The museum features a small  sample of  jewelry and bibelots that George created,  a dollhouse collection, a library  which displays many  artifacts  the couple collected while traveling,  a rose garden and a seashell grotto.  Sadly  in 1994, thieves  broke into the museum and stole 103 pieces of  jewelry and bibelots  from the collection, which were never recovered.

The shell grotto was my favorite!

dscf2167

dscf2164

dscf2163

Yes!  Those are shell geese flying across the ceiling!!

dscf2172

Lastly – a quiet spot on the property  serves as the final resting  place for the  couple’s pets.   George and Barbara loved  dachshunds and had several through the years.    Each grave marker has the name and dates of each pet.   I was told that the  dogs  were so loved that sometimes they were even  dressed in diamond jewelry.

Hope you enjoyed this peak into the life of George and Barbara!

NATIONAL GINGERBREAD HOUSE COMPETITION DISPLAY 2016, Asheville, NC

dscf2178

Nov. 27, 2016

What better way to boost  one’s holiday spirit  than to enjoy dozens of imaginative  Gingerbread Houses?   Every holiday season, there are many Gingerbread House Competitions throughout the country,  but the one held at The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC  claims to be the largest.   It has been a annual  Grove Park Inn tradition now for 24 years.  After a terrific Thanksgiving feast  and about 8 hours of driving,  these were my favorites of the  150  I saw on display:

dscf2192

Keep in mind – the rules say – it  all  has to be edible…

dscf2189

Not sure what this is about  but you have to love the expression on that baby’s face!

Now you may be asking – who won this competition?

dscf2214

2nd Place

As I said, these were my favorites, though  I applaud them all for the hours of planning, work and dedication to finish their  wonderful  creations.

Arrivederci Magnifico Italia

mts-of-heaven

Italy’s Mountains of  Gelato  Heaven

Oct 10, 2016

May I first say – my heart felt  thoughts and prayers go out to the citizens of Italy after the devastating  earthquake today and in the past months.   Wishing all that were affected a speedy recovery to a normal life, a resilient  rebuilding of your homeland  and a peaceful earth beneath your feet in the future.

All good things must come to an end, including my  enjoyable visit  to Milan, Pisa and Florence, Italy.

My closing thoughts…

dscf1400

Regarding Italian Gelato – clearly there is no  competition .

dscf1504

Regarding the architecture –  the adornments on  Italian buildings never cease to fill me with awe – this  Lion’s expression almost chased  me across the street!

dscf1394

Regarding the churches –  every church I entered  was filled with beauty,  history, amazement and wonder.

Blindly I walked into the Church of  Orsanmichele  in Florence with no prior knowledge or  suggestion from people, guide books or Google, yet, I  walked  in and stood  before this  intricately  built tabernacle  and painting and was stunned by it’s beauty.  It’s story is also amazing.    In the 13th century, the building that stood here  was a straw market.  During this time,  the first “Madonna of the Graces” was painted on a pillar in that market and soon followed by miraculous events.  The building  and  painting was  destroyed by a fire in 1304.  Rebuilt in 1337, still as a  straw market.  In 1347  Bernardo Daddi’s “Madonna and Child with Angels” was commissioned to replace the original “Madonna of the Grace”. While  it remained a commercial site,  pilgrims inspired by  the miraculous events and sightings of the Madonna there, came in increasing numbers, especially  after the Black Plague struck in 1348.  As the legend grew  the tabernacle was built  in 1359  by Andrea Orcagna  to protect  the new  “Madonna of the Graces” ( the one in this photo).  Eventually the  building was dedicated as a small chapel and oratory in 1380.  The stained glass windows  were added  and are  some of the oldest in Florence, and illustrate the miracles of the “Madonna” of Orsanmichele.

dscf1404

Regarding the crowds – lots of people were  everywhere  in Florence (and at all of the famous attractions in Italy) –  even as the rain continued all day long.   Bless the people  that were standing on every corner selling $5.00 umbrellas and ponchos.   What more can I say except that everyone loves Italy ?

duomo-unbrella

My pokka-dotted umbrella adds a little extra  pizzazz to the Duome, don’t you think?    There were many more photos like this with the pokka- dots edited out.

dscf1430

Lastly, regarding Pinocchio –  I really need  to include Pinocchio in this last posting  of Italy,  as he is a much loved character in Italy and can be seen everywhere in many different  forms –  ornaments, books, stuffed dolls, puppets,   key chains, etc.   Pinocchio  was the creation of the Florence- born  Carlo Lorenzini, a political author.  Under the pen name of  Carlo Collodi ,  he wrote the story of Pinocchio.   Collodi died 7 years later, in 1890,  so he didn’t   live long enough  to see the spectacular success of  Pinocchio’s story.  It has now been translated in over 100 languages and is one of the world’s best sellers.

Pinocchio Park opened in 1956 in the hilly Tuscany village of Collodi, where Carlo Lorenzini’s mother  was born.   The village was Collodi’s  inspiration for the setting of the book – thus it is  also Pinocchio’s “home town”.

Parting sayings?

” A lie keeps growing and growing until it’s as plain as the nose on your face.”   ( Pinocchio)……  or…

” A thousand  woodpeckers flew in through the window and settled themselves on Pinocchio’s nose”    (Carlo Collodi)

Most fitting  me thinks since we are  days away from electing a new president in the  United States.

Thanks for reading and please vote responsibility.
