April 28, 2018
It is finally spring and the Missouri Botanical Gardens is once again blooming with color and aroma. I could smell the hyacinths and hear the birds singing throughout the park . If you are a tulip fan, you need to get to the park soon, as about half of the tulips are already spent. Here is a sample of what you can see…..
Bird of the day – Purple martins – who love the condo life and to entertain the humans, and themselves, with activity and endless song. The male is a dark purple color and the other a juvenile. After watching and listening to them at the gardens, I realized I needed a purple martin house in my backyard.

Happy Spring!!!!

The Garden of Glass show ends at the Missouri Botanical Gardens on August 13, 2017. Craig Mitchell is a fused-glass artist, and while in my opinion he is not a Chihuly, most of the pieces are eye-catching and more than 24 displays can be seen for a small entry fee. All but 3 of the displays are located in the Climatron , fitting nicely into the existing beauty.
Here’s a sampling of Mitchell’s work along with some of the live plants at the Gardens…….
Water Lilly ( live)
The Phoenix
Glass poppies of all colors could be were found popping up in every nook and cranny.
Live flowers…
with their glass counterpart.
Abundant live dragon flies enjoyed the waterlilies in front of the Climatron.
The Dance of the (glass) Dragon Flies
Love these crazy looking ( live) orchids!
Bird’s Nest(s) filled one of the Climatron trees.
Don’t miss this display in the Cactus house.
Hope you enjoyed!

The Beautiful….
The Bizarre…
Feb. 27, 2017
There is still time to see these orchids yourself at the Missouri Botanical Gardens until March 26, 2017 !!
There are the traditional orchids…
and the not-so-traditional (which remind me of the term ” organized chaos”) .
Individually dainty….
or a dramatic family in all its glory.
Some with stunning color…
Some in a drunken slumber…..
Some that resemble a gathering of aliens…..
Some peaceful, orderly and tranquil…….
Some jolly and eager to tempt u into a closer look….
Some like a graceful dance in the breeze…
Some bold and daringly different (is this really an orchid?)
Some flighty…
Some close-knit, all with intricate detail….
Some with eye lashes……
But all to be enjoyed ……
and let me not forget to mention the magnificent fragrance that fills the room as you meander among these incredible flowers!!!
Lastly – a quick trip thru the Climatron and a sighting of a permanent resident…
Thanks for reading !
Hope you enjoyed!!

March 27, 2016
This is the last day to see the annual Orchid Show at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. The show is all indoors and I just love these funny little flowers. Orchids are proof that Mother Nature has a never ending imagination and a silly sense of humor.
Some interesting facts : There are documented 25,000 different species of orchids and some can survive up to 100 years. Orchids can be as small as a penny or the largest weighs a couple of pounds. They can grow anywhere in the world except where it is extremely cold or hot, though most live in tropical rain forests. The flower of some orchids can last a few hours up to six months. Orchids produce millions of tiny seeds but only a few will develop into a plant. Substances from the orchids are sometimes used in perfumes, spices and Asian medicine. Vanilla is probably the best know use that comes from the orchid.
Am I seeing things are does this look like a face? Such a happy, big smile!
The traditional prom or wedding inspired orchid.
These remind me of dancing stick puppets.
Whirligig orchids
Such beauty and detail
Very interesting……..
These last two photos were from an interesting framed arrangement of small bottles strung together in front of a rain forest mural.
Hope you enjoyed the photos! If you are interested in seeing a photo of the monkey orchid, naked guy orchid, owl orchid, bee orchard and the smallest orchid, go to:

The Lantern Festival at the Missouri Botanical Gardens ends this August 30, 2015 so time is running out if you have been procrastinating! Twenty-two beautiful and colorfully lit displays crafted with silk, wire and porcelain are featured. A few samplings are:
The elephants are incredible, especially when you take a moment and imagine just how many pieces of porcelain make up the display. The close up photo ( double click on it for a real close up ) shows off the cups , saucers, spoons, etc crafted to create the elephant’s bodies.
A path way of cherry blossoms and dandelions.
Lovable Panda Bears
Modeled after a Stupas Pagoda in China, this display is built with over 300,000 pieces of plates, bowls, spoons, tea cups, ladles and wine cups.
Lastly, my favorite, Bird Land.
