SPRING BIRDS ARE THE BEST , 2020 !!

Nuthatch waiting  his turn at the feeders.

May 25, 2020

Nuthatch chowing down.

The  first new bird to my feeder this spring – the song sparrow.

My second new bird this spring – the chirping sparrow

Always a fun sighting  are the fledglings  that have just left the nest.  This is a fledgling cardinal.  Cardinals nest in my front  bush every year.

Possibly mama cardinal taking a much needed break?

I have not heard any babies peeping yet, but the Eurasian sparrows have taken  up residence in one of my blue bird houses and are definitely defending their space.

Bottoms up for this robin while bathing.  A water source will always help attract  birds.

Downy woodpeckers and

Finch enjoy the hummingbird nectar all summer long.

The cowbird is an interesting  bird as it will lay it’s eggs in other bird species’ nests . Cowbirds can lay up to 36 eggs a summer,  abandoning their young to foster parents.   Sadly, this  usually is done  at the expense of  some of the host’s own chicks.

Once again, the bluebirds were back today  checking out my empty bluebird house.  I am always  hopeful that my box nest will be chosen.   This is one way the male courts the female by offering nesting material.

This is the female bluebird,  the nest box is ultimately her choice and she will build the nest.

The pair spent the better half of the morning  in my backyard.

Hopefully I will report baby  bluebird peeping news in the near future!

BIRDING (&TURTLES TOO) AT THE LAKE OF THE OZARKS, 2017

Red Headed Woodpecker

July 7, 2017

An enjoyable weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks this past weekend also allowed me some time for birding.   My most excited sighting was the Red Headed Woodpecker, which I have only seen in rare occasions and never this close up.   Such a beautiful woodpecker but also very quick, so the photos I succeeded in getting were patiently  earned!

The Downy Woodpecker is always a favorite, and yes, they  love  hummingbird nectar!

The Tufted Titmouse visits to the feeders  were  plentiful but I also  spied this one  perching in the tree near me.

The nuthatch are little piggies and  were at the feeders almost non stop.

Gotta love it when you can witness a baby finch being fed.

During  an adventurous  paddle boat ride, mama  and baby turtle were  found sunning themselves.  However, on a closer approach, mama wasted no time  diving in the water with baby not far behind…

Birds of all sizes came be seen at the lake…..

Hope you enjoyed cyber birding!

Backyard Birding Fall 2015

DSCF7292

Finch in  her  muted winter colors.

December  2015

As winter approaches the backyard buffet changes to black oiled sunflowers seeds and suet for energy and added fat for warmth.  Water is always  is needed but it is time to put the heater in it so my feathered friends can enjoy their “hot tub” once again.

Always love this House Finches with the little hint of pink near their bottom.

The Nuthatch  comes to dine  daily now as the days are cooler.  I  discovered the  nuthatch loves peanuts and will keep making continuous trips to the feeder until she has taken them all!

The Black Capped Chickadee  is so fast that it is difficult to photograph.   This was a lucky shot as she gracefully flees with her snack.

with his full belly,  the need for a nap came creeping in…..

and he fell asleep for a good 10 minutes before he was interrupted.

Backyard birding is always free entertainment just outside my window!

Thanks for reading, please  feed the birds, if you can,  as food and water become scarce this winter.
