BIRD KINGDOM, NIAGARA, ONTARIO

Image

July 4, 2013

Last day in the Niagara Falls area and I decided I needed to visit Bird Kingdom, a free flying indoor  aviary for over 80 species of birds.  It was great!!  Beautiful birds, easy to observe and photograph.  This  is just a brief sampling of what I saw….

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ONTARIO, CANADA

Today was a more relaxing day exploring the beautiful little town of Niagara-On-The-Lake and a  famous  battlefield  from the War of 1812.  Niagara-On-The-Lake is a charming  town full of  flowers, friendly Canadians, shops and restaurants, a beautiful park and many wineries.  The battlefield is now the sight of many walkways and a monument honoring Major General Sir Isaac Brock who died in the Battle of Queenston Heights.. Plus the weather today was beautiful  – what a great day!

Quick trip to visit Niagara Falls on the Canadian side – incredible to see and a must to ride the Maid of the Mist Boat Ride.  You may notice in the photo that everyone is dressed in blue.  They do provide you with a  blue  rain poncho so you only get wet instead of drenched.  But it was exciting to be that close to the Falls!

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA, Oldest City in the USA

Oldest School House in the USA

During a recent trip to Florida, my friend Gayle and I made a brief stop in St. Augustine.  With only a couple of hours before moving on to our next destination, we choose to walk through the  Old City Historic District ( generally referred to as  St. George Street).  Some of the orginal buidings still stand (such as the drugstore, school and old mill)  and others have been turned into shops and eateries.  The original city gates,  the Castillo De San Marcos Fort ( at the waters edge)  and a wonderful  parking garage were all in close walking distance. We enjoyed our all too brief visit.   Next time we will have to plan for more time!

SOLOMON’S CASTLE, ONA, FLORIDA

Solomon’s Castle

If you find yourself in or near Ona, Florida , an entertaining way to spend a half day is to tour the home and galleries of Howard Solomon.  Ona is approximately one hour  outside of Bradenton, a suburb of Sarasota.  An artist and sculptor who creates his works of art from discarded material, Howard’s galleries display over  300  interesting and sometimes humorous  pieces.  After touring the castle, stay a bit, enjoy lunch at the Boat in the Moat restaurant  and take a  stroll on the grounds.

For directions and hours, here is the link to the  web sight:

REFLECTIONS ON MY NOVA SCOTIA & NEW BRUNSWICK TRIP

Jeannie (me) and the Hunky Dorey

Back home and once more reviewing my  Nova Scotia and New Brunswick photos,  I think  back and remember  strikingly beautiful  and clean  Provinces . I recall  friendly  Maritime Canadians and wonderful  Seafood Crowder.   The vast acreage of  untouched land has  more trees than I have ever seen  and a great many of them pine. It’s what you imagine an overgrown and out of control  Christmas tree farm would  look like.   While taking a walk  one day, it even smelled like  Christmas trees.

I loved all the water,  the colorful boats, the stacks of lobster cages,  the  fishing villages that look like  something in a movie set  and the Bay of Fundy’s extreme tides.  I could be content taking photos of the high and low tides and the boats that are victims to them  everyday, given the chance. The Canadian Maritimes  are a  super place to have an adventure and explore and ten days doesn’t begin to even scratch the surface.

Hope you enjoy these last photos of my Canadian trip and  let me introduce you to a few  boats I met along the way….

HOPEWELL ROCKS, HOPEWELL CAPE, NEW BRUNSWICK

Warnings in two languages!

Last sightseeing day of the trip and we went to see the Hopewell Rocks in the town of Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick.  These sandstone rocks, that stand by themselves, are also affectionately  referred to as Flower Pot Rocks .  It is believed that the  certuries’  force of the Fundy Tides has carved these rocks into their flower pot shape from the cliff  and will continue to change them in the years to come.

The Rocks and the ocean floor  were interesting to see and the rocks  were huge!  I can’t even believe to tell you how huge they were.  The high tide that day was 40 feet at Hopewell Rocks  and low tide was 4ft. So, obviously, at high tide, you can only see the Rocks from the look out up top.  Afterwards I went into their restaurant and had a wonderful piece of pumpkin pie. Then it was  time to climb back in the car for the four hour trip back to Halifax for some last minute shopping and fly home .

Thanks for traveling with us through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick!

Hope you enjoyed it!

My Closing  Shot at the Rocks – Mother Nature was good to me with the soft cloud and sun’s rays!  That happened just by chance – it’s not a filter, honest !     : )
