Image

APRIL   12, 2014

Today was a trip to Keukenhoff,,  a 60 acre garden about an hour outside of Amsterdam , which is open only 2 months out of the year to the public  for a tulip  extravaganza!

It was WONDERFUL !!!    Beautiful, colorful flowers that smelled  soooo good were everywhere !!!  Just for pure enjoyment!!  We simply walked around enjoying the flower arrangement plantings, the authentic windmill and even a boat ride down the canals to see  the fields of tulips fields.  Hope you enjoy the photos!!

DAY 2 in AMSTERDAM and the RIJKSMUSEUM

Image

Day 2 in Amsterdam and  my friend Judy and I were hit hard from the aftermath of  jet lag and slept in. When the  hotel maid finally  made us feel guilty enough for making her come back too many times than I care to admit,  we   ventured out  and headed for the Rijksmuseum. We went to the Van Gogh Museum yesterday  and, frankly, were a little disappointed.  But the Rijksmuseum was WONDERFUL!! If you go to Amsterdam and like art, do not miss this!  But  is also huge and would be difficult to see in an entire week, so, if possible, plan ahead of time what you must see.  There is something for everybody in the Rijksmuseum.  Art, furniture, fashion,  weapons, china, ship replicas, stain glass windows, ,,,the list goes on and on…   PLUS they let you take photos – always a plus!   (no photos allowed at the Van Gogh). Just a few of my favorites are  the 1737 Dutch pictorial  tiles (above) and……….Image

This beautiful floral  covered dish  with a  baby spilling flowers out onto the lid.  It was one of a set of 4.

Image

This massive yet  intricately carved  fireplace.

Image

Image

This collector’s cabinet  from 1730 held little bottles containing  medicinal ingredients……

.Image

This ship replica  actually had moving working people  super- imposed onto the ship  to show a typical day onboard.

Kind of creepy, because they also looked sort of ghost like, but what a great idea!  How do they do it?????

Image

Image

Plus hundreds of  beautiful  paintings, some familiar such as” Vermeer’s Milkmaid”  and  some maybe not so familiar.

The Rijksmuseum is fascinating!    I also want to mention we had dinner  at the  Small Talk Restaurant  where the staff is friendly and the Hungarian Goulash and Apple Streudel was great!   Btw, we  walked 7 miles today – that will give you an idea to the size of the museum because our hotel was almost next door to it.

Tomorrow we go to Keukenhoff to see the tulips!

Thanks for reading and traveling along with me!

AMSTERDAM , NETHERLANDS

Image

April 9, 2014

Hello from Amsterdam!!!   It is wonderful to be traveling again and this is such a beautiful and interesting city with the canals,  the boats,  the architecture  and more!..  Amsterdam is a friendly city , very walkable  ( we walked 11 miles this first day)  and lots to see.

Can u see me? ……….. I’m standing in the “m”.      “m ” for me !      Sorry –  silliness and jet lag  are an unstoppable combination!

Image

Amsterdam is in full  spring bloom  and its so beautiful!

Image

Tulips and Bikes are a common sight in Amsterdam,  :  )

    Image

Besides lots of exploring on foot,  we took an enjoyable canal cruise  which also gave us a good overall look at the city.Image

One of our interesting  “must sees” was this  very tiny  house, 32 feet x 8 feet, which is  attached to the Oude Kerk ( Old Church),  Oude Kerk  is the oldest church in Amsterdam, built in 1300.  Yes, some one actually lives  in this house,

I   Image

An unexpected sight was this person riding a camel down the road.  Can’t tell you anymore about it – we were just as puzzled!

Then, after such a busy day, Judy’s feet hurt and she had to buy some new shoes.

More Amsterdam to come!  Stay tuned!

CAROLINA WREN IN SEARCH OF DINNER

Image

April Fools Day 2014 and it’s not very funny

I received this cute birdhouse that was covered in birdseed  as a gift from my daughter.  When I hung it up, it didn’t take long for the birds to find the new food source.  This Carolina Wren was especially pleased to fill her belly and would return frequently.

Image

She was even willing, though maybe reluctantly, to share. But sadly, the starling told many of his relatives about the food house and before long……..

Image

the house was picked clean. When the Carolina Wren returned for an easy meal, she was not at all happy. I’m confident that if she had had a lower lip, it would have been sticking out.

After searching all around the house, this little bird looked even more perplexed as to what happened to all of the food until…..

finally she just couldn’t take it anymore and had a pitiful break down.

There were other backyard options for her to try and she made the rounds that afternoon to all of them….

….just didn’t necessarily enjoy them. Then she was gone. A true story.

BACKYARD DOWNY WOODPECKER ACROBATICS

Image

MARCH 30, 2014

This handsome Downy Woodpecker comes to my backyard quite often to see what there is to munch on and I am always impressed with his coordination and agility.  Hope you enjoy watching him dine and entertain at the same time.

Watching for danger and showing off his red crown at the same time.

This is a female Downy (  without the red patch)  who comes frequently also – maybe a significant other?  We may never know  –  Downys don’t mate for life, it’s just a summer romance.

PLEASE FEED OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS WHEN IT SNOWS

Image

Posting Dated  January 25, 2014

The snow has melted now ( thank God) .  Just like a lot of the country, we got hit with some winter weather this month.  But, in spite of the snow, a bird feeder and some water will still bring bird watching opportunities, plus, our feathered friends will be very grateful.  Here’s a sampling of my visitors:

MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDENLAND EXPRESS FLOWER AND TRAIN DISPLAY FOR 2013

Image

December 2013

It’s that time of year again!  Time to visit the St. Louis Missouri Botanical Gardenland Express Flower and Train Display. This year’s theme is “Gathering for the Feast”.  Fun for all ages but maybe just a tad more for the younger set.  But  whatever your age,  you can’t help but to appreciate the instant lift to your holiday spirit , the cheerful colors, and the comfortable indoor location.  My favorite was the cranberry lake with it’s train full of cranberries and the interesting twist on centerpieces. For more Gardenland Express info :

EURASIAN TREE SPARROW AND BABIES IN MY BACKYARD

Image

JULY 10, 2013

Several famous Eurasian tree sparrows,  ( a bird that serious bird watchers travel from all over to  see in  St. Louis)  have decided  that my backyard is a good place to raise a family, get  a quick meal, or a drink of  water.   These Eurasian  Tree Sparrows are descendants of  the same that were released in  Lafayette Park in St. Louis,  Missouri in 1870 and even though they established a population  in the southern St. Louis area, they have  not  spread across the continent.  These birds looks similar at the common House Sparrow but  they lack the aggressive behavior  of  the House Sparrow.  My Eurasian Sparrows eat from my finch feeder and  safflower feeder.   I’ve enjoyed  the wonderful opportunity to watch from my patio as  a pair of these sparrows raised and fed a couple of fledgings.  Hope you enjoy the photos of dinner time in action .

WHITE LINED SPHINX HUMMING BIRD MOTH

Image

Monday, September, 30, 2013

Before  these summery days  get entirely away from us,  I wanted to share with you my  newest  little visitor.   In all of my years of gardening, I have never seen one of these critters before – a White Lined Sphinx Humming Bird Moth.  When I first saw it I thought it was a baby humming bird and , of course, ran for my camera.   But the closer I got a better look at it, I could tell I would have to do some Googling to find out what it was.   He’s a fast little critter , meticulously  checking out each flower for  any source of nourishment.   Every time I see him, he is visiting this one plant only  and will stay up to  20 minutes.   I found this to be an interesting article  about humming bird moths if you’d like to know more and thanks for reading!
